To achieve the flexibility and autonomy demanded of today's AGVS, implementation of original concepts and more efficient use of existing technologies will be required. Floor-reference free guidance systems, on an AGV endowed with more sophisticated sensing and computing capabilities, can lead to safer and more self-governing vehicles in various industrial environments. To a great extent, these features owe their existence to onboard microprocessors that allow the design of a low-cost balanced network by distributing the data processing capabilities to the most advantageous location. Design criteria of such a network and associated practical considerations are presented.
