Many factors influence the start up characteristics of a spark ignition engine. Mixture enrichment during start up and cold engine running has been the traditional route to achieving acceptable performance and fuelling control strategies can be developed by trial and error. This approach can be time consuming and has provided little to advance understanding of the problems involved. A new laboratory facility for engine cold start and warm-up research, and a new approach to cold start performance evaluation are described. The start characteristics of a 2.0 l OHC, fuel injected engine have been examined over a range of ambient temperatures from room temperature to -20 Cel. The effect of mixture ratio on combustion quality at speeds and temperatures encountered during engine start-up has been identified through quasi-steady state tests. From these tests, optimum fuelling conditions can be readily identified.
