Assuming a quarter car representation, the dynamic response of the two degrees of freedom stochastically excited linear model is studied. A procedure is suggested to determine a law describing how stiffness and damping rates have to vary according to vehicle speed, to ensure both comfort and nearly optimum road holding (verifying that working space does not exceed an accettable limit). Comparing the results with conventional passive suspension systems it is shown that for every road roughness rate, comfort is enhanced while road holding is close to the optimum value, on the other hand working space, slightly increased, remains into accettable boundaries. It is found that a good performance can be achieved even keeping the stiffness rate constant with vehicle speed.
