The American Society of Mechanical Engineers/American National Standards Institute (ASME/ANSI) B31.8 is an internationally recognized standard for installing buried gas pipelines. The B31.8 Code addresses installation criteria for pipe and field bends but does not have guidelines for amounts of acceptable subsidence; any subsidence is considered excessive by B31.8. Designing pipelines by this procedure is acceptable as long as no pipelines are ever dug up to reveal that all pipelines undergo some level of subsidence. This paper describes the techniques used to simulate via nonlinear finite element analysis the strain energy absorbed by a subsided high pressure buried pipeline that was inadvertently uncovered and found to have higher than predicted levels of subsidence. In addition, this paper emphasizes the similarities between subsidence and making field bends and the fact that both should receive the same scrutiny and luxury by the industry standards.
