Finite element idealisations of rotor systems which include shafts with significant taper angles, often model the tapered sections using stepped, uniform cross section elements. As part of a study of the shock response of rotor-bearing systems, the stepped approximation has been compared with two new taper section finite elements. These include the effects of translational and rotational inertia, shear deformation, gyroscopic moment, axial load and torque, viscous and hystertic damping and mass eccentricity. Not only do the tapered elements give more accurate predictions of the modal parameters than an equivalent stepped idealisation, but they provide monotonic convergence as the number of elements in the model is inreased.
