Fastener materials originally used offshore had not been designed specifically for use in marine environments and many of them proved susceptible to stress corrosion or hydrogen embrittlement failure. This paper describes the techniques developed and used during a 3 year investigation of the performance of 4 widely used alloy specifications exposed to stress and fresh seawater under controlled cathodic protection potential (C.P.). The results show that hydrogen induced stress corrosion cracking is a very important failure mode, and have demonstrated the vital role of the level of C.P.; cyclic stress; alloy composition and heat treatment.
