Many of the potential application for structural composites demand good corrosion resistance. This is especially true of chemical process plant, pipes, offshore installations, vehicle parts, and primary aircraft components. Until recently, the choice of matrix for long fibre, high fibre volume fraction composites in anti-corrosion applications was restricted to thermosetting resins. New families of aromatic thermoplastics have been produced, which differ in their detailed structure, but offer two important advantages, characteristics of semicrystalline polymers: toughness, and reduced liquid uptake. This investigation is concerned with the environmental resistance of one commercial composite material (AS4/APC2 carbon fibre reinforced polyaryl ether ether ketone) to immersion in fluids associated with service in aircraft parts. The liquids were water, jet fuel, hydraulic fluid, anti-icing agents, and a constituent of paint strippers. The unstressed composite demonstrates excellent retention of mechanical properties. Subjection to severe environmental stress cracking conditions, with stresses of 65 % ultimate tensile strength, also shows very encouraging results for lay-ups containing longitudinal piles. In the most extreme case, notched specimens of all-transverse lay-up were subjected to high stresses; these showed failures in some cases. Photographic evidence shows the locus of failure to be in the matrix. The overall results indicate considerable potential for this and for similar materials in agressive environments.
