Hydrostatic dynamometers can provide an effective and flexible approach to the performance testing of engines. This paper describes problems that have been met in the design and development of a laboratory installation for the test of a 116 kW turbocharged diesel. The design and implementation of the hydraulic system is discussed together with modifications that have been made to its control components to improve performance. Additional to the hardware changes the application of digital control techniques has helped to raise performance levels. The development of the control system from a simple fixed parameter PID controller to a digital model reference scheme is described.
