The primary objective of any product is to satisfy a customer need in terms of providing a function. The design activity traditionally concentrates in this areas altohough, within the business, manufacturing is also an important customer of the design department. Their need in for a design which can be produced in the appropriate quantities, in a cost effective manner tos suitable quality standards. A significant consideration for manufacturing is product 'assemblability'. Good assemblability leads to lower product costs, higher levels of quality and reliabiity, and where the opportunity arises allows the use of cost effective automation. Many considerations have to be taken into account when designing a product. One which often does not receive sufficient attention is assembly. The design for assembly methodology assesses the necessity for the various components in a product, as a reduction in parts count reduces handling and stock-holdung costs. The methodology then examines the ease of handling and assembly of the parts. This paper describes a knowledge - based system to facilitate the use of this methodology.
