In order to reduce weight, improve reliability and increase safety, in addition to providing enhanced oil loss tolerance and performance improvement, significant changes in the design of future helicopter transmission are envisaged. Such designs are likely to place unacceptable demands on conventional gear steels, thereby restricting further opportunities for advancement in transmission development. Improvements can be made by changing to one of the newly developed temper resistant carburising steels, but the indications are that in order to achieve a fundamental advance in performance it will be necessary to change both the material and the heat treatment process. This paper summarises the properties attainable with a novel surface engineering technique, known as 'Duplex Hardening' and discusses its potential and suitability in the processing of high performance gears.
