Shuddening in automotive drive trains is most often caused by friction induced stick-slip or dynamic vibration. The prediction of this phenomenon, and its control, are of great interest to equipment designers and lubricant formulators. This paper describes the use of the Low Velocity Friction Apparatus (LVFA) for this purpose. The LVFA is used to model clutch systems and their operating conditions, and from this data predictions of operating conditions under which stick-slip behavior could occur are made. The influence of friction material, mating steel surface, thrust load, temperature and lubricant are all examined.
