The feasibility of a process to form flanged type sheet metal parts by repeated localised deformation or incremental forming is investigated. A finite element analysis of the process is conducted and is found to agree reasonably well with experimentally measured deformed shape, total forming force, and plastic surface strain. The success of forming an unwrinkled convex (shrink) flange, over a former, using a grooved roller is demonstrated. The finite element analysis results are used to investigate the requirements for replacement of a dedicated former by only partial support of the web in the locally of deformation. The success of forming a shrink flange in aircraft alloy without dedicated tooling is shown.
