High-speed rail represents a sizable but long-range potential new market for suppliers of advanced composites. There are two basic approaches - high -speed steel-wheel trains similar to those operating in Europe and Japan, and maglev systems which promise even higher speeds and may require greater use of advanced composites to prove technically feasible. A variety of applications for composites are given for both of these basic approaches. U.S. organizations favour using superconducting maglev systems and some details are provided on the concept under study by one of the teams currently working on a Federal Railroad Administation study contract. The presentation will include an update of any recent process toward building high-speed rail systems.
