Presently, most of the controlling-systems for variable message signs are working with fixed rules. Because of that, the traffic-sign-management is extremely inflexible. Other electronic systems, capable of making decisions based on learned experience, require large computer capacities for controlling traffic-processes in realtime. In comparison to that, the IVMS is a new control system for message signs, which controls and supervises traffic-processes by using its own past experiences. It permantly compares actual traffic data with all other states observed in the past. The result of this comparison leads to traffic-forecasts and corresponding decisions for the near future. In addition, the IVMS-System is very compact, sturdy and cost effective. Therefore, it can be installed on the road. A network of several IVMS-units can be implemented as well as a stand-alone operation. The method of experience processing implemented in this system enables it to adapt automatically to changing traffic situations and environmental conditions. The IVMS is based on a multi-processor-system combined with modern highly integrated gate-arrays. Parallel-processing is used extensively to process large quantities of data much faster than conventional systems could.
