A rotary engine was investigated with respect to compatibility with hydrogen fuel. The unique structures of the rotary engine clearly prevent hydrogen combustion problems - such as backfiring, and pre-ignition - and burn hydrogen in the stoichiometric air-fuel ratio, making it easier to obtain higher output for hydrogen combustion than with the reciprocating engine. The hydrogen fueled rotary engine of the pre-mixed mixture method has specific output power of 63 % of the gasoline specification while that of the hydrogen fueled reciprocating engine under the same method is 50 %. Development of a system to directly inject low-pressure hydrogen in the early stage of the compression cycle to further improve output power of the hydrogen-fueled rotary engine resulted in specific output power of about 90 % of the gasoline specification.
