A considerable interest has recently been expressed by oil companies and engineering contractors in the use of Lateral Mooring Systems (LMS) for Tension Leg Platforms (TLPs). To a layman the concept of providing extra station keeping through an LMS for a TLP when the vessel is already tethered to the seafloor with tendons might sound confusing. After all, the tendons themselves provide lateral mooring restraint, and it might be argued that by introducing an LMS, hardware and installation problems are compounded and costs increased. In actuality the choice is much more complex than generally understood. Therefore, the main objective of this paper is to identify and discuss the issues which lead a designer or operator to select or reject using an LMS in a particular TLP design. As secondary objectives various design considerations are addressed, both on and off platform components are discussed and operating considerations evaluated.
