Autonomous Intelligent Cruise Control (AICC) is predicted to be part of the motoring scene towards the end of this decade. Some American experts want to use AICC as a means of increasing traffic flow without building more freeways in congested areas. In Europe it is seen as a way of increasing the use of a speed control system ie. standard cruise control, which has little take up in Europe's traffic conditions. Most experts agree that the introduction of a comfort system could lead the way to the eventual acceptance of more interventionist collision avoidance systems. Assuming that these systems will incorporate some form of automatic braking, this paper looks at techniques which automatically apply brakes without an input from the driver.
