Hot rolled, high strength carbon-manganese and carbon-manganese-silicon sheet steels, combining yield and tensile strengths of 350 and 540 N/mm2 minimum respectively with good cold formability, have been developed by British Steel. These steels are applied to make a range of vehicle structurual components thereby contributing towards automotive weight reductions. The favourable combination of properties is derived from a ferrite-bainite microstructure developed by precisely controlled thermomechanical and run-out cooling conditions during hot strip mill processing. Plant trials have successfully identified conditions for producing higher strenght (tensile strenght 700-800 N/mm2) formable steels based on the TRIP mechanism.
