In order to improve the current turbine engine design practices, the Aero Propulsion and Power Directorate is developing a probabilistic design tool. The current deterministic system is fine for maintaining the status quo, but their objective (IHPTET) is to double the thrust to weight of turbine engines. Accurately predicting structural characteristics has been difficult in the past because of the 'safety' constraints imposed on the designer. Probabilistics attempts to minimize this overzealous conservatism by combining and prioritizing the statistical distributions of the various design variables. A design approach that incorporates these distributions with an appropriate risk analysis will generate a better estimate of a components robustness. This system will ultimately lead to enhanced performance and attainment of gas turbine engine goals.
