The goal of the computer controlled natural gas carburetor project is to develop a natural gas carburetor that is effective in accurately maintaining stoichiometric operation in an internal combustion engine. The computer controlled carburetor uses a modified standard natural gas carburetor and a stepper motor with closed-loop feedback control. The exhaust gas oxygen (EGO) sensor is used to indicate deviation from stoichiometric operation. A computer measures the EGO output and issues commands to adjust the carburetor as needed. The initial results of the research are encouraging. The computer controlled carburetor is able to effectively maintain stoichiometric operation within a limited range. Experimental results indicate that the steady-state response is satisfactory. The transient response to step changes in throttle position is marginally acceptable, but could be significantly improved with suggested changes in the hardware or the control system programming. The range of acceptable operation (5 to 20 % wide-open-throttle) is limited by the mechanical apparatus used, but several remedies are suggested.
