Quasi-static formulation which is solved by the implicit time integration is the best method to analyze sheet metal forming processes. However, the method has two major difficulties. The first one is the convergence of the iteration for each load step and the second one is the long computing time needed for large finite element models. The convergence difficulty has been addressed at Ford, but the long computing time for large models still remains an issue. A local 3-D model, which can analyze areas with complicated geometry and at the same time reduce the computing time to an acceptable range, is proposed.
