Increasingly, epoxy resin systems are used as matrix material for structural, load-bearing, automotive compossoite parts. The first such automotive component was the transverse rear leaf spring on the Chevrolet Corvette, introduced in 1980. Since then many sports vehicles and, especiall, small trucks have served as a testbed for high volume production of these parts. In this paper, epoxy resin systems for the manufacture of composite leaf springs via solventless prepreg routes and Reaction Injection Moulding techniques will be introduced. It is shown that, depending on part size and geometry, cycle times as short as 3-10 min can be realised. These materials exhibit glass transition temperatures in excess of 120 deg C and show good static and dynamic properties. A computer modeling package to simulate the conversion and temperatures of the curing composite to optimize the cure conditions will also be presented. In addition, the long term properties of these composites under hostile environmental conditions and non-destructive quality control techniques for the final parts will be discussed.
