Examples and potential are described for using high power CO2 and Nd-YAG laser to create the lightweight structures in automotive, aeronautic and aerospace industries. Sheet metals from 0.5 to 8 mm thick include carbon steel, superalloys, titanum alloys and aluminium alloys. The purposes were on the assembling of lightweight structures with minimal deformation, on the reduction of total weight by combining laser techniques with structure designs, and on the improvement of properties and performances.
