An electric vehicle (EV) is now in the limelight as a measure to counter environmental problem, such as exhaust gas and noise in urban areas. The EV can also effectively comply with the diversified energy sources and meet the requirement of efficient energy consumption, and very effective particularly for overall averaging of daily power loads. The EV, the development of which the authors are pursuing, is based on a compact gasoline engine vehicle with an engine replaced by an electric motor. The selection of this much compact size aims at the wide spread of the EV among the general public. A compact, light, highly efficient driving system that also serves as an onboard battery charger is what the authors aim to develop for use in the EV. This battery charger is designed for charging from various power sources as follows: Charging from an AC power source in the home. For promoting the overall averaging of electric power loads, it is effective that the EV is charged from late-night power supply. Quick charging from a DC power source at a charging station. The voltage adopted by charging station in Japan is in the range from 48 V to 280 V. Booster chopping is applied to this battery charger. Charging from a solar photovoltaic. On sunny day this battery charger can be charged from a solar photovoltaic which can supply energy infinitely.
