For many years, chemically treated and tropical wood products have been used in marine facilities. Engineered composite plastic products have been introduced to provide alternatives to the use of these traditional materials. A presentation of the design, development, test, and use of composite plastic marine materials is provided, from both a historical user prospective, to a current view of industry acceptance of the materials. Economic, environmental, and performance factors are summarized to provide the engineer and facility operator with quantifiable criteria upon which project material specifications can be made.
