The waterside corrosion behaviour of brazed aluminium automotive radiators was investigated using a radiator with nine common tube materials and continuously circulating ASTM water at 88 deg C. Despite the low (and normal) flow rate, 1.5 m/s, disturbed water flow has contributed to the attacks on the aluminium found after 1400 hours in the rig. Tubes with dimples seem to be more heavily attacked than those without dimples and with protruding ends. There is very modest, hardly visible, corrosion in the tubes and no significant difference between the alloys. Potentiodynamic polarisation experiments support the findings. The results are comparable to those obtained for a full-scale brazed radiator tested under the same conditions.
