One alternative fuel that generally is feasible is compressed natural gas (CNG). The feasibility and economics of converting one federal facility's fleet of buses, trucks, and automobiles to CNG was analyzed. The project analyzed 1547 typical light-duty vehicles (cars and pickup trucks) and 277 heavy-duty trucks (e.g. truck tractor, dump trucks, wrecker trucks) in use at the Hanford site. The analysis focused on identifying the vehicles appropriate for fuel conversion, determining the energy and cost savings potential, evaluating the operations and maintenance costs, ascertaining the cost of conversion, and determining the percentage emissions reductions that could be achieved by converting the fleet to CNG. All of the technical and economic aspects of converting the Hanford fleet to alternative fuels were analyzed using a life-cycle costing methodology.
