Semi-Solid Forged (SSF) aluminium parts are replacing iron and steel in automotive applications. These parts have reduced component weights by as much as 65 % with no compromise in performance. This paper reviews the basic forming processes and alloys in use. Several examples of automotive parts that are now being produced by SSF are given. These components are being forged with consistently high strength, high integrity and high ductility, in automotive quantities and a 'just in time' environment. The SSF capabilities for near net shape and dimensional control are discussed. A comparison of machining operations and finel part weight vs conventional forming process is made. The economic considerations of the process and potential cost advantages are also discussed.
