A physically-motivated method for modeling of the dynamic behavior of viscoelastic materials continues to be developed. The linear method of ADF (anelastic displacement fields) has been extended to model strain-dependent behavior of viscoelastic elastomers. The extension is based on introducing nonlinear functional forms that describe the unrelaxed and relaxed moduli, and the evolution of the anelastic strain. The resulting nonlinear coupled partial differential equations are spatially discretized to obtain time-domain finite element equations of motion. Two different elastomeric materials were characterized, each using stress data from only two harmonic tests. Model validation studies indicate satisfactory correlation. The potential of the subject method will continue to be explored using the present and alternative functional forms to characterize other nonlinear viscoelastic damper materials. To illustrate the potential of the new ADF finite element formulation, a bi-material snubber-damper assembly was modeled. The snubber damper finite element model was used to numerically simulate a limit cycle scenario, a problem often associated with elastomeric lag dampers. This work provides a framework for continuing research on elastomeric dampers and their effects on rotor performance and stability.
