The paper presents a semi-active damping system for lateral motion on trains. Measures of ride quality, lateral acceleration, jerk level are used for comparison between the semi-active system and standard passive damping. The comparison is carried out through simulations and with an experimental prototype system tested on a real train. The results show an improved isolation between bogie and car body. The system has been developed for the X2000 train and tested on various tracks and speeds. The system hardware, software and control strategy are described as well as the test methods and test results. The comparative study of lateral semi-active damping has shown that the comfort can be improved considerably. The simulation showed that the improvement varies between different units in the train set. First and last unit in the train set seem to be the main contributers to the improvement in comfort.
