This paper describes the nationally funded activities in the field of transportation system and spacecraft material and structure technology development in Germany. In the field of transportation systems various materials and manufacturing processes for propulsion systems are investigated and CMC (ceramic matrix composites) 'hot structure' for reusable reentry vehicles are under development. A segmented hot structure component and a movable control flap will be developed for a flight experiment, especially to solve oxidation, tribology, scaling, load introduction and connection problems. For ARIANE 5 the net shape spin-forming process of the tank domes for the main stage and the welding process of the booster case are investigated. Another activity is related to the space debris problem. Beside the modelling of the space debris environment much effort has been spent on the investigation of hypervelocity impact effects on spacecraft structures. In this paper, only an overview on the present activities on space structure technology development and its programmatic relevance is given.
