The currently available cruise control systems which maintain a fixed speed are a well known form of longitudinal driver support. The fixed speed cruise control becomes less useful with increased traffic volumes, as the driver must disable the system when a slower preceeding vehicle is encountered. Intelligent Cruise Control adds a forward looking sensor to detect the range and relative velocity of a preceding vehicle. The system can adjust it's own vehicle speed, by controlling the engine and brakes to match the speed of the preceding vehicle and maintain a driver selected vehicle spacing. The introduction of Autonomous Intelligent Cruise Control (AICC) with braking intervention will lead the way for the acceptance of interventive collision avoidance systems. These systems will have the ability to apply up to maximum braking force to avoid or mitigate a collision. Collision avoidance systems will require multiple forward sensors to offer reliability and integrity. (AICC) will be marketed by a number of vehicle manufacturers before the end of decade. This paper describes AICC and the next generation systems currently being developed and validated within the Fourth Framework project, Anti-Collision Autonomous Support and Safety Intervention SysTem (AC ASSIST).
