It has for a long time been difficult to reach an agreement in international standardization work on the definition of the severity of vibration containing single event shocks, typically experienced in mobile machinery. A comprehensive study of correlation between values of single event shocks and annoyance, made in Sweden, has shown best correlation when defining the shock severity as the maximum of its running root mean square (rms) value. The best results have been achieved with rather short integration times used for determination of the running rms value - on the order of one second. Higher-order moments and simple response values have not been found to correlate better with shock severity than the running rms value.
