The amount of high-strength steel grades in the car-body has increased over the last six years. Especially for the outer panels the new Preussag high-strength and isotropic I-steel allows a weight reduction on these parts of nearly 15 % without changing the tool-design. This paper outlines the development of I-steel up to series application by different car manufacturers. With the reduction of sheet thickness the corrosion protection has to be improved due to extend the guarranty against corrosion over 6 years. New coatings, already applied in line in the steel work, like Bonazinc 3000 or Zincroplex Black increase the corrosion resistance. The forming and joining behavior of these coatings will be shown as well as the improvements in the corrosion resistance.
