Modern electrostatic paint spraying installations are key areas in todays highly automated automotive production lines. A fire in this area would have a devastating effect on production as well as incurring enormous costs. A constant fire hazard is present in these areas because the two main ingredients for fire are constantly present: flammable paint mixtures and high voltage electricity. Powder coating, at this moment becoming a more and more feasible concept for car body coating, will introduce new and different hazards. The IRS protection concept counters this danger in a novel and effective way. IRS fiber optic flame detectors monitor all critical areas of the paint spraying installation including the spray elements, roof and overhead machines. Fire caused by electrostatic arc over will be detected within the first few milliseconds of ignition and suppressed immediately at its source. Damage to the equipment by fire and extinguishing agent and thus production downtime is kept at an absolute minimum. For the unusual case the fire occurs outside of the critical equipment a secondary flooding stage for the booth is automatically triggered.
