A helicopter rotor system health monitoring methodology is formulated for an articulated rotor. A rotor aeroelastic analysis based on finite element modeling in space and time, and capable of modeling dissimilar blades, is used to simulate the damaged and undamaged rotor. The relationship between rotor hub loads and fuselage vibration is approximated by a neural network trained on simulated hub loads and flight test fuselage vibration data. The rotor faults are modeled as changes in inertial, stiffness, damping and aerodynamic properties for the damaged blade. Changes in measurable rotor system behavior such as blade tip response and fuselage vibration at the pilot seat are investigated for selected faults and summarized in diagnostic tables.
