A recently developed Submerged Turret Loading concept (STL) for loading oil offshore is in use on several oil fields in the North Sea. In Arctic waters, the presence of floating ice provides several additional challenges mainly connected to loads from level ice, broken ice and pressure ridges. Model scale tests with the STL have been performed in the Hamburgische Schiffbau-Versuchsanstalt GmbH (HSVA) ice tank in Hamburg. The model ship had a conventional icebreaking bow and a length between perpendiculars of 6.535 m. The testing was performed at a scale of 1:36. A wedge in front of the chain table cleared ice from the STL-buoy area. The tidal current tests indicated that the STL-system has good weather vaning qualities in ice.
