With an applied research program, the feasibility of self-supporting car side doors made of fiber-reinforced plastics (FRP) with integrated side impact protection structures was investigated. As a result of this program, several extracts of the development process of new FRP-concept were documented. To study the performance of the concepts, it was necessary to analyze the most important load cases. The results of the static structural analysis show that the requirements on stiffness and strength can be met. In addition, the weight of the structure was reduced about approximately 30%. The analysis of the fixed pole crash show that the requirements of FMVSS 214 can be accomplished.
