Residual stress development in an experimental undercoat-top, coat combination for marine applications has been studied under various laboratory conditioning procedures. Coatings were applied to steel substrates singly or as bi-layers and residual stress changes followed by monitoring the curvature change during (i) solvent evaporation; (ii) water immersion; (iii) drying out after water immersion; and (iv) temperature cycling. Mass changes under these conditions were measured. In some cases the residual stresses were significant (approximately 4 MPa) when compared to the failure stress. The residual stress magnitude in the bi-layers depended on the thicknesses of the two coatings.
