The accuracy of gear machining is a key to the performance of a vehicle's transmission systems. However, accurate gear measurements by current mechanical probing techniques are very time consuming. Because of its slowness, only several lines are scanned across the gear tooth surface, which often do not faithfully represent the whole gear tooth surface profile. In this paper, a phase-shift optical triangulation technique is applied to the gear profile measurement, which has the advantages of redundant information, speed and non-contact nature. Experimental results have shown that 10-5 relative precision can be easily achieved. A measurement speed of a few teeth per second can also be expected.
