Airborne contributions to interior noise for road/tire sources are of potential importance at higher frequencies above 1.6-2 kHz. The attenuation of structure-borne transmission across the suspension and body is increasingly effective at higher frequencies leaving the airborne transmission of noise radiated into the wheel wells due to the vibration of the directly excited suspension components. For a given vibration level on the knuckle or spindle, the rear wheels/axles result in greater interior noise levels in comparison with the front wheels/axles, possibly as a result of the lighter weight of the structure in the rear for the front wheel drive vehicle that was tested.
