In Japan Hyougo South Area, the earthquake (January 17, 1995, Magnitude 7.2) has caused serious damages on common and industry facilities such as LPG storage tanks. With regard to the LPG storage tank the leakage of LPG happened from bolted flanged joints of the first inlet valve and the main reason is considered to be the detrimental landslide due to the liquefaction near the seaside. At present, bolted flanged joints for pipe connections are standardized in the codes of JIS (Japan Industrial Standard), ASME, DIN and so on, but in the codes the effect of the external load applied to the bolted flanged joints is not taken into consideration. Bolt clamping forces and external bending moments is axi-asymmetrical loads, and no investigations using detailed analysis treated as axi-asymmetrical loads are made except for some papers. In this paper, mechanical behaviors of bolted flanged joints subjected to external bending moments are analyzed as axi-asymmetrical problems using Finite Element Method (FEM). The analytical results show good agreement with the experimental results, and the analysis makes it possible to assess the maximum external bending moment when leakage occurs under internal pressure. In addition, variation in bolt axial force and the contact stress distribution are analyzed when a bolted flanged joint is subjected to internal pressure and external bending moment.
