Four-point bend test of polyvinyl chloride (PVC) pipe with controlled displacements for various pipe joints were tested to failure. In two year program, many specimens of PVC pipe with adhesive socket joints were tested in four point bending with pressures varying from zero (0 psig.) to the rated internal pressure of 280 psig. These results are also compared to plain pipe without joints. All testing was done using a special apparatus developed to accommodate the large deformations required to obtain fatigue failures. This apparatus will be described as well as the results. Both strains and stresses are plotted versus cycles to failure. Finite element models of the socket joined specimens PVC pipe were analyzed to establish the areas of stress concentration and explain the observed failure modes.
