To optimize the performance of any part of an hydraulic system, as the draft of a Francis turbine, computational fluid dynamics is the best appropriated method. But, it is however necessary to check the validity of the calculations using experimental measurements. We present here an experimental study of the flow in a model of a draft tube of a Francis turbine intend to be build for the Sanxia (Three Gorges) hydro power in China and carried out in a blowdown water tunnel, the main feature of which being that the head pressure is free of any fluctuation. Velocity measurements have been achieved using a five holes probe enabling to determine the three velocity components. The probe is linked to a traversing mechanism moved by a stepper motor. Probe displacements and measurements are controlled by a personal computer. Several measurements in various locations of the draft tube have been achieved giving a picture of the flow and enabling to check the validity and accuracy of various numerical methods.
