The construction of large cryogenic wind tunnels will be or little benefit for aircraft development, if force measurements in such tunnels are not possible with at least the same accuracy as in conventional tunnels. Up to now this target is still far away due to severe thermal effects in the strain gage balance. For two of these effects novel approaches are outlined in the paper. The effect of apparent strain over the whole temperature range is minimized by a compensation of each individual gage. With respect to temperature gradients a novel arrangement of the axial force systems allows a correct separation of thermal effect and force measurement.
