Whole new worlds are opening up, thanks to new high-performance metal matrix composites. Superalloy composites provide the high-teperature strength required for more efficient advanced rocket engines and gas turbines. Titanium and titanium aluminide composites provide the light weight and high temperature capability required for the national aerospace plane (NASP). Magnesium composites provide light weight and high stiffness in aerospace and other applications. Other matrix metals provide new solutions to long-standing problems. Iron composites reduce weight and improve strenght for aerospace components. Copper composites provide ductility for superconductors, high thermal conductivity for high heat-flux applications such as rocket engines, and tailorable properties for electronics applications. Refractory metal composites provide the strength and fatigue life required for space-based nuclear power systems and toughness for wear and corrosion applications.
