The aerospace industry's demand for stronger, cleaner, higher-temperature alloys is being met by new materials and innovative processes. Alloy development for high-temperature strength is an absolute requirement for advanced engines and for structural and skin components of the National Aerospace Plane (NASP) and other leading-edge aerospace applications. Alloys capable of high performance at elevated temperatures are typically iron-, cobalt-, or nickel-based superalloys. In addition to new materials, processing developments over the past decade have improved the quality of existing alloys. Even further advances coming on line in the next decade will lower costs and open space as a viable commercial frontier.
