Stress corrosion cracking of aluminium structural components, as well as those manufactured from titanium and high-strength steels, can result from residual tensile stresses induced in the surface. If a residual compressive stress of predictable magnitude and depth is induced such that the resultant surface stress, which is the algebraic sum of the residual and applied stress, never exceeds the threshold level, stress corrosion cracking can be prevented. This can be achieved by CSP. However, it is equally important that repair organizations understand that CSP is completed for specific reasons and, should the surface be removed for any reason during repair and overhaul periods, then CSP must be repeated in the same well-controlled manner as that conducted initially by the manufacturer.
