Underground pipelines are protected by a good anticorrosion coating and cathodic protection (CP). An impact-resistant barrier coating is applied over the coating when select material backfilling is not feasible. Concerns arose that barrier materials could cause shielding of CP currents. A laboratory program was initiated to determine which materials posed a shielding problem. Experiments led to the tentative conclusion that commonly used barrier materials have tradeoffs in their physical and electrochemical properties.
