There is a major program being funded by the Gas Research Institute which is studying all of the variables associated with Magnetic Flux Leakage (MFL). This program has the objective of improving the current MFL technology by providing basic information on the significant variables that affect the shape and amplitude of MFL defect signals. This basic information will then facilitate the design of more complex experiments and modeling routines to study interaction and gain a more fundamental understanding of MFL capabilities and limitations. The information from this program is also used to develop entirely new analysis techniques. Several team members are working on using artificial intelligence, i.e., neural networks to do both classification and characterization of defects automatically. There is a tremendous progress being made which will undoubtedly lead to more reliable and more accurate inspection tools. This in turn will lead to safer and more efficient maintenance of the pipeline systems currently in place.
